That’s a wrap for the first of June…we’re starting to see a little rain coming on as we are beginning our rainy season – however the fishing is always good and when it does rain most times it will hold off until the afternoon – plus everything is lush and a beautiful green!!!!!!!!!!

Here are a few tips to make your fishing better:

  • remember no bananas on board ever
  • don’t have your fishing belt strapped on until you are hooked up
  • don’t uncap your camera lens until a fish is on
  • these are some sea protocol that may mean nothing but it is always good to follow these rules of Ocean fishing and keep the Gods happy

as always stay up on our Web for the best deals on Luxury condos and villas….And keep up with Sunny One action by going to http://www.youtube.com/user/sunnysporfishing.

Until next time, keep your tip up………..Catch’em Up – Salty Dog

100,000,000 sharks are killed each year – yes, that’s 100 million!

June 5th, 2011

By Bill Miller  / SICR Staff / Sunday, 5 June 2011

Sharks are quickly disappearing from the Costa Rican Pacific waters because of their unfortunate demand for their fins which sell for $200 per pound to make shark fin soup, which can fetch up to $300 per bowl. So what to do? Well, one idea may be to complement the spirit of the International Game Fish Association’s (IGFA’s) marlin off the menu campaign to prevent eating marlin so future generations can enjoy the sport of catching and releasing them, so too, sharks have to be protected – shark fin soup off the menu. Sharks are caught by long liners and even occasionally get hooked on sport fishing lines to the captain’s dismay. In 2004, Costa Rica supplied 8,000 tons of shark fins to Asia making it the world’s 3rd largest supplier!

Because Costa Rica has new tougher laws, some fleets are moving northward to Nicaragua where enforcement and laws are not so strict to land the shark fins.

Many restaurants in Costa Rica have shark fin soup on the menu. One easy step is to boycott this practice, but the demand is so strong and with few Coast Guard boats on the Pacific, it is an impossible battle to win.

Well Im going to jump back to March 10th with Mr. Issacson fishing on Sunny One… They hook up a monster Dorado, Capt. Walton thinking this could be a World Record hails up some people on the radio and reports a 95 Lb. Dorado that they just hooked up. He seems to have gotten some misinformation and is told the record is 120Lbs. Which finding out later is not true, it seems the record is around 87Lbs. However by then the fish has been consumed. But the good news is some photos were taken of the weigh-in… so I’m waiting to see what is going to happen if anything – will keep you posted. At any rate, we know Sunny One bagged a world Record Dorado. Congrats Issacsons. Advance to 13:24 on the time line to see the monster dorado.

That will wrap it until next time. You can see the record Dorado and other Sunny One fishing action by going to http://www.youtube.com/user/sunnysportfishing. Remember the best deals on luxury Condos and Villas in Costa Rica and of course some of the Best Sportfishing on Earth – check out our Web.

Thanks for the wake!

April 25th, 2011

Orca whale (Orcinus orca) surfing the wake of a sportfishing boat in the Osa Peninsula (courtesy of Crocodile Bay Resort)

Last week’s Tico Times fishing report had this amazing shot with the caption, “What fish?”

Wikipedia informs that fish-eating killer whales prey on around 30 species of fish, particularly Chinook, salmon, herring, and tuna. In New Zealand, rays are killer whales’ most frequent prey, and they have also been observed hunting sharks (particularly makos, threshers and smooth hammerheads). Squid and sea turtles are also taken.

These toothed whales can eat up to 500 lbs. each day and females live on average 50 years and males live on average 29 years (lifespan in captivity is significantly reduced).
